Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
